Weekly News: April 18 - 22

April 18 - April 22
There is no school on Friday, April 22nd. Enjoy the three day weekend!

The due date for the Community Service Projects has been set for our class: Presentations will be due the week of May 2 - 5. Presentations in the past have included: poster boards, journals, slideshows, books, and pictures documenting your 6-8 hours of community service. Please visit our Community Service tab if you have any questions.  You will also find the service project rubric on the tab. Students will be presenting their projects in class Monday through Thursday of this week. Please make sure projects are turned in by THURSDAY, May 5th.  Thank you!

Save The Date: We will be having a Mother's Day celebration on Friday, May 6 from 11:00-12:30. More information to come. I wanted to let you know early in case you need to take the time off work or find childcare for little ones. The School Childcare fills up quickly on this day and is on a first come first serve basis.  If you have alternative childcare this is a good day to use it.  Please understand that our classroom will be VERY CROWDED on this day!  It is a special celebration for moms and their kindergarten student.  For this reason we are unable to accommodate siblings in the classroom on this day.  Thank you in advance for your understanding.  This is SUCH a special celebration and we hope all of you mommies are able to make it!

Friday is Earth Day! To celebrate, we will be learning all about recycling and discussing ways to help the Earth. We will also have a special Earth Day Sharing this week. Check out the Homework tab for more information.

If you did not send in a baby picture of your child last week for Turn in Homework please send one in this week!  We are doing a special project with the pictures.  Thank you!!

Upcoming Events:
April 22 - No School
May 2 - Community Service projects are due this week.  Please turn projects in by THURSDAY May 5th.
May 6 - Mother’s Day Celebration in the classroom 11:00 - 12:30

What Are We Learning This Week?:
Sight Words: HELP, START, WORLD, EARTH, CHILDREN.

Letter Team: EAR (another ER sound like in EARTH and EARLY). This is our last letter team we will learn this year!!!

Reading: We will read books about recycling and Earth Day.  You will also find a special Fluency Earth Day Reader’s Theater in your child’s book bag this week.  Please make sure this is brought to school every day as we will be practicing fluent reading in our reading groups with these scripts.  Please support your child at home by practicing each night.  Reader’s Theater is a style of theater in which students do not memorize their lines, they read from the script.  Students use only vocal expression to help the audience understand the story rather than visual storytelling such as costumes, sets, and props.  These scripts will help us practice our fluency.  Thank you for your support!

Writing: We will write a step up to writing about ways to take care of the Earth. We are adding details to our stories. Some of us are even writing eight sentences now for Step Up to Writing, adding explanations after every "detail" sentence. For example:  My spring break was so much fun.  First, I went to Disneyland.  I took a picture with Mickey Mouse.  Next, I went horseback riding.  I was a little scared but still enjoyed it.  Last, I visited by grandma.  I baked delicious chocolate chip cookies with her.  My spring break was a busy and fun time.

Math: We will continue our new math unit focusing on addition and subtraction.

Leadership: Our leadership theme for the month of April is Responsibility.
