Weekly News: February 5-9

Mark your calendars for two three-day weekends coming up in a row, as there is no school next Monday, February 12th and no school on Monday, February 19th. 

We are so excited for our field trip on Tuesday! We will be leaving school RIGHT AWAY (please be on time!) and returning by dismissal. If we are running late due to traffic, we will send out a ParentSquare - please check your ParentSquares on this day so that you are aware of pick up time. On Tuesday, you will not need to bring your folders, but please pack your child a lunch in a paper bag with his or her name. No lunch boxes please. We will be eating our “sack” lunches at the museum following the tour.  Chaperones can ride the bus with us or follow. Don't forget that chaperones will need to pay a $5 cash fee at the door (exact change please), but for student admission, please donate $15 into our Kindergarten Dollar a Day fund. This donation will help cover the cost of the tickets and bus. Here is the link: Dollar A Day. 

We will be celebrating Valentine's Day together after our three day weekend next Wednesday. We are still in need of MANY Capri Sun boxes. We will be wrapping and decorating these and using them for our Valentine mailboxes. If your child would like to make valentines for the class, a list of boys and girls names will be sent home next week. This is great writing practice for your child. Please check the sign-up on ParentSquare if you would like to donate towards our fun Valentine's Day centers or volunteer on this day.

Students have been so excited about our letter team challenge! Because I was out sick Friday, I will be assessing students on Monday to see which class won our challenge! We will be having a sight word challenge NEXT week, so keep practicing those sight words! We need to beat Mrs. Stanley's class!

What Are We Learning This Week?:

Sight Words: EACH, PHONE, LAUGH, ALSO, YOUR.

Letter Team:  PH (makes the "F" sound like in PHONE and GRAPH).

Reading: This week we will continue reading books all about our country. We will be learning all about our American symbols (flag, liberty bell, bald eagle, White House, Mount Rushmore, etc.) We will learn the meaning behind the words of the Pledge of Allegiance. There is a note coming home on Monday with the words and the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance. Please go over this with your child and discuss the meaning, as we will be doing the same in class. 

Writing:  We will continue practicing writing a Step Up to Writing paragraph with a topic sentence, three things about that topic, and a conclusion sentence. 

Math: This week, we will continue to learn about place value (tens and ones) and I will begin my end of the trimester assessments. Make sure to keep practicing all math skills with your child, as they will be assessed on their counting, shapes, measurement, place value, addition and subtraction, composing and decomposing. 

Leadership: We will continue to ROAR and discuss what it means to have a growth mindset!
