Weekly News: August 30

News:

Picture Day is Tuesday! Dress to impress and please bring your picture day envelope back to school on this day - EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT ORDERING PICTURES! This information is needed for student ID cards.

Our first Copy and Staple Party will take place this Friday, September 3rd in our Dunlap Office. At 8:15 am (as soon as our day begins) we invite all parents who are able, to help copy and prepare materials for the next month of kindergarten. We really appreciate your help and support in your child's education!

Visit the songs tab to hear our sight words.  This is a great way to learn the sight words and reinforce letter identification too.  Have your child point to each letter as they sing the letter name.

Visit the Letter Teams tab to see the letter teams we are learning.  Remember to make flashcards for each one!  Have your child look for these letter teams as they read to you AND as you read to them.  You will notice how quickly they will learn to read as this knowledge builds.

No school next Monday, September 6th due to the Labor Day Holiday. Enjoy the time off with your families!

What Are We Learning This Week?:

Sight Words: I, LIKE, MY.

Letter Teams: SH (like in "she" and "push") and ER (like in "her" and "mother").

Leadership Theme of the Month: Initiative

Reading: We are reading big books to help reinforce the reading strategies we are learning in class. Reading strategies we have learned so far include, "Look at the picture", "Get your mouth ready for the first sound", and this week we will focus on "Make your finger match the word". For example, when your child is reading the small paper books at home, they should have a finger under the word they are reading. This helps to ensure that they are learning and retaining the sight words. This week, we are reading books about the five senses, books about colors, and our special poem of the week, "Monster Colors".

Writing: We are writing a big book together about the five senses using sight words we have learned so far. We are learning to put spaces between each word, use an uppercase at the beginning of each sentence with lowercase letters throughout the rest of the sentence, and use a period at the end. We are also learning to use our sight words in our sentences and to listen for the sounds in all unknown words using our sound chart. You can help your child at home by using the same sound chart on the back of  your GO Folder to help with sounding out words and writing at home.

Math: We are learning how to identify, order, and count numbers to 30 and how to write numbers to 10. We are also learning the days of the week, months of the year, shapes, how to read and extend patterns, and identify what number comes next.
