Weekly News: August 23

News:

We had a great first week of school! Thank you parents for attending Back to School Night, for ALL of your generous donations, and for your birthday wishes!

Thank you to the parents who signed up to be my "Morning Daily Folders" helper. This will begin this week!

Congratulations to our room-parent of the year, Michelle Arambula! Michelle has already been talking with PTO and planning many things for us, so if you'd like to get involved, please see her! Looking forward to a fun-filled year!!

What Are We Learning This Week?:

Sight Words: IS, THE, ME

Letter Team: TH (we are learning that TH has two different sounds - a hard sound [like in mother and the] and a soft sound [like in thumb])

Leadership: Here at ILCS, we focus on a certain leadership theme each month. This month our theme is "initiative". For sharing this week, students will write one sentence about a way we can take initiative. Draw a picture to go with your sharing and this is due any day this week.

Reading: We are reading big books by the author, Joy Cowley. Students are learning how to finger point to each word they are reading starting from the left and reading to the right. We are also learning strategies to help us when we are stuck on a word. Last week, our strategy was "Look at the picture" to help us figure out a word. This week, our reading strategy is: "Get your mouth ready for the first sound". We are also reading books about beginning school, books about how to be friends in the classroom, and our special poems of the week, "I Like Jelly" and "I Like School".

Writing: We are writing a book together about shapes and colors using the sight words from last week and this week. This week we are learning that a period goes at the end of the sentence then an uppercase letter begins a new sentence.

Math: We are learning to identify, order, and count numbers to 30 and how to write numbers to 10. We are learning the days of the week and months of the year.
